Cleaning Magic
Cinnamon BunCleaning Magic is the magical expression of Cleaning and one of Broccoli Bunch’s defining abilities. It is tied to cleaning-aspect mana, improves ordinary tidying and washing, and eventually allows Broccoli to project cleansing force at visible targets. What first appears to be an almost domestic power becomes a versatile answer to ghosts, slimes, and other forms of magical or bodily pollution, while also marking Broccoli as a support-oriented Cinnamon Bun whose instinct is to restore rather than destroy.
Definition and Magical Affinity
Cleaning Magic develops from the Cleaning skill, initially described simply as the ability to clean. At the beginning of Broccoli’s progression, Cleaning is ranked F at 90 percent, presenting improvement in speed and quality rather than an obviously offensive capacity. The Cinnamon Bun class frames this modest aptitude within a broader moral identity: Broccoli is “the perfect support and friend to all” and is called to cleanse the world’s impurities in the name of love and justice. The language is exaggerated enough to make Broccoli snort, yet the later uses of the magic give that description concrete force.
The magic is specifically associated with cleaning-aspect mana. When Broccoli is questioned about the nature of the power, the explanation identifies cleaning aspect as relatively common, especially among serving staff, while also placing it near holy, light, and water aspects. This proximity suggests that Cleaning Magic occupies an unusual middle ground: it is not rare or inherently prestigious, but it carries a purifying character that can cross from household labor into supernatural intervention. Its limitation is equally clear. Because Broccoli’s mana is aligned toward cleaning, casting fireballs is difficult; the affinity that makes cleansing intuitive makes destructive fire-aspect manipulation harder.
Operation and Development
At first, Cleaning Magic is costly and physically limited. Broccoli’s magical showerhead produces only a weak spray, and mana decreases quickly during use, though the water remains sufficient to scrub a floor. This early application makes the skill material and laborious: dust is swept into a neat pile, a file folder is used to transfer it into a garbage chest, and the showerhead, mop, and bucket complete the work. The magic does not erase the practical world so much as make Broccoli better equipped to manage it.
Its capabilities expand through practice and advancement. At a higher rank, Cleaning becomes exceptionally effective at tidying and washing, with a marginal increase in effectiveness and the new ability to use mana to clean things Broccoli can see. That change turns the skill from an enhancement of manual work into directed magic. Broccoli forms mana in the hand and releases it as a burst that leaves the floor clean and shining, demonstrating that the power can be controlled as a projected effect rather than merely channeled through cleaning equipment.
The power still requires effort and judgment. Broccoli must gather the appropriate aspect, and the magic may be used rapidly when danger demands it. During the fight with a slime attacking Amaryllis, Broccoli runs forward, tries to pull Amaryllis free, presses a hand against the monster, and casts the quickest cleaning spell available. The slime’s tentacle bursts into motes of light, allowing Amaryllis to fall free. The episode shows both the immediacy and the logic of the ability: Cleaning Magic does not resemble a conventional weapon, but it can dismantle a hostile magical substance when applied at the point of contact.
Combat Uses and Boundaries
Cleaning Magic’s first clearly lethal application is against a ghost. When a ghost reaches Broccoli and grabs the face, Broccoli apologizes before firing cleaning magic into it; the ghost bursts apart. The apology is significant because the attack is framed as cleansing rather than as an assertion of martial dominance. Broccoli’s emotional and ethical language remains that of someone removing an impurity, even when the result is the destruction of an undead enemy.
The ability is especially valuable against supernatural bodies and magical contamination. Broccoli later identifies having “a lot of Cleaning magic” as a principal contribution against undead, alongside Makeshift Weapon Proficiency. In this role, the power compensates for weak conventional fighting ability. Broccoli does not present as a skilled frontline combatant; movement relies heavily on Jumping, while Cleaning Magic supplies a specialized ranged or emergency response. The ability therefore functions tactically as both a support tool and a form of damage, depending on whether the target is a floor, a ghost, a slime, or another magical threat.
Its limits prevent it from becoming an all-purpose solution. Slimes are concentrations of ambient mana that attach themselves to magical things, including people, and Broccoli’s attack against one requires proximity, speed, and a fast spell. Broccoli also cannot simply assume that a cleaning affinity will produce fire. The need for fire-aspect mana, the rapid consumption and movement of fire mana, and the difficulty of controlling it establish a contrast between cleansing force and ordinary elemental offense. Cleaning Magic is powerful because it is specialized, not because it ignores the rules of the setting.
Purity, Pollution, and Social Meaning
The concept repeatedly appears wherever the narrative tests the boundary between cleanliness and contamination. Broccoli endures food containing dead, thumb-sized insects, chewing one before retreating from the meal and falsely claiming to be full. The scene makes cleanliness more than a mechanical statistic: it is also a bodily and social negotiation, in which disgust, politeness, hunger, and unfamiliar customs collide. Broccoli’s magic gives supernatural form to the same impulse that produces discomfort before insects, sewage-like smells, mud, exposed bodies, and other substances associated with pollution.
Yet the story does not reduce all dirt to evil. Broccoli and Amaryllis hide in mud, sinking almost to the lips to avoid detection, while Orange stands on air rather than touch the mud. Elsewhere, the stench of abominations becomes unbearable once the urgency of escape has passed, and even Mister Dryad visibly dislikes it. These episodes distinguish practical danger from sensory revulsion and show why Cleaning Magic is ambiguous: it can answer a real threat, but its language of purity also reflects Broccoli’s innocence and instinctive discomfort with disorder.
The ambiguity is sharpest around the dead and the undead. Gunther explains that he travels with Throat Ripper and settles quietly because classes associated with undeath are poorly regarded; death mana can damage a region if left too long, while skeletons are easy for Throat Ripper to uncover. Broccoli’s response is sympathy rather than immediate condemnation. Cleaning Magic can destroy a ghost, but Broccoli can also recognize that not every association with death is morally identical. The power’s purifying function is therefore moderated by Broccoli’s friendships and compassion rather than converted into a simple doctrine that everything unfamiliar must be erased.
Narrative Role and Significance
Cleaning Magic embodies the tension between Broccoli’s apparently gentle class and the violence of adventuring. The Cinnamon Bun description promises support, friendship, purity, and love; the actual story makes those promises operational through a spell that can burst ghosts apart and sever a slime’s grip on Amaryllis. Broccoli’s softness is not the opposite of effectiveness. It becomes a method of action, especially when protection requires immediate intervention.
The magic also gives Broccoli a distinctive position within a team. Broccoli admits to not fighting well, but identifies Cleaning Magic as the main resource for dealing with undead and similar threats, while describing Jumping as a strong movement skill and aspiring to a ranged damage role. That self-description reveals a developing combat identity: Broccoli is still learning the vocabulary of adventuring, yet the supposedly humble cleaning affinity already supplies a recognizable specialty.
Most importantly, Cleaning Magic converts an everyday activity into a world-altering practice. It begins with sweeping dust, scrubbing a floor, and worrying about mana consumption; it advances into visible, concentrated force; and it ultimately saves a companion and destroys supernatural attackers. Through that progression, cleanliness becomes neither mere household labor nor abstract virtue. It is a form of care, a defensive discipline, and a weapon against bodies and substances that threaten to overwhelm the living world.
